In response to Governor Josh Shapiro's budget proposal for the 2024-25 fiscal year, Representative Bud Cook (R-Greene/Washington) has expressed concerns over the affordability and responsibility of the plan. The budget proposal aims to increase state spending by 8%, or $3.7 billion, which Cook believes will burden the taxpayers and lead to a significant tax increase in the future.

Cook criticizes the governor for "spending down state reserves" and predicts that they will be fully depleted within the next 3-4 years. He argues that this approach to budgeting is not responsible and will ultimately place a heavy financial burden on individuals, families, and employers who are already struggling with inflation.

However, Cook acknowledges that the governor's budget plan is just the starting point for negotiations that will take place in the coming months. He emphasizes the need to carefully evaluate the proposed initiatives and prioritize funding to ensure that the state can meet its commitments while staying within its means.

"My goal is to ensure the state is meeting its commitments while being mindful of the taxpayers who must pay the bills," Cook asserts. He highlights the importance of responsible budgeting and a thorough examination of the budget proposal to ensure that the needs of the state and its citizens are met without imposing unnecessary financial strain.

As the budget negotiations progress, it remains to be seen how the concerns raised by Representative Bud Cook and other lawmakers will be addressed. The affordability and responsibility of the budget proposal will undoubtedly be key points of discussion, as Pennsylvania strives to find a balanced approach that meets the needs of its residents while maintaining fiscal stability.
