Rep. Bud Cook and Sen. Camera Bartolotta have congratulated the California Area School District for receiving the 2025 Governor’s Award for Environmental Excellence. The award was given by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP).
The district’s submission included an outdoor science school featuring an apiary, yurts for education, and advanced programs. A notable program involved a student-led energy study that proposed strategies to reduce energy costs, which were then implemented.
“Students are our future, and the California Area School District is helping them move forward with real-world skills and experiences,” said Rep. Cook. “Congratulations to them on this prestigious recognition.”
Sen. Bartolotta added, “Involving students gives them the tools to understand the economic impact of their choices—both now and in the future. I’m proud that the DEP recognized this valuable partnership by selecting California Area School District for the award. This project is a smart, forward-thinking investment that shows how responsible energy use can reduce costs.”
The district also received funding through the Solar for Schools Grant Program.
“In addition to coal, oil and natural gas, solar can be a reliable energy source,” noted Cook. “Giving students the chance to explore these options in a real-world setting is how we set them up for success.”
