Rep. Bud Cook has expressed concerns over Governor Josh Shapiro’s proposed budget for the 2025-26 fiscal year, which totals $51.47 billion. According to Cook, this proposal represents a 7.5% increase over the current fiscal year and could potentially deplete the General Fund surplus.
Cook criticized the governor’s approach, describing it as “irresponsible and short-sighted,” with potential negative impacts on Pennsylvania’s long-term growth. He further argued that Shapiro’s plan includes harmful energy taxes targeting coal and natural gas power plants in Western Pennsylvania, which he believes would lead to higher energy bills for consumers.
“Shapiro’s spending dreams remain out of touch with the needs of the hardworking taxpayers of Greene and Washington counties,” Cook stated, emphasizing his view that the proposal disregards the financial future of Pennsylvania.
As the budget process begins, Cook anticipates challenging what he perceives as overspending and aims to ensure that Pennsylvania operates within its means.
