The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced the termination of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haiti. The current TPS designation is set to expire on August 3, 2025, with the termination taking effect on September 2, 2025. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem made the announcement today.
According to DHS procedures, at least 60 days before a TPS designation expires, the Secretary must review conditions in the designated country to decide whether they still meet the criteria for TPS. A DHS spokesperson said, “This decision restores integrity in our immigration system and ensures that Temporary Protective Status is actually temporary.”
The review process involved consultation with U.S. government agencies and was based on an assessment by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services and discussions with the Department of State. Secretary Noem concluded that conditions in Haiti have improved sufficiently for Haitian citizens to return safely.
Haitian nationals are encouraged to utilize resources provided by the Department for their return, including arrangements through the CBP Home app. They may also seek lawful status through other immigration benefit requests if eligible.
Secretary Noem’s decision reflects a determination that allowing Haitian nationals to remain temporarily in the United States is not aligned with U.S. national interests.
