Jason Ortitay, a prominent figure known for his active involvement in educational matters, recently shared a series of tweets addressing concerns about the reading lists released in Pennsylvania. His comments highlight perceived deficiencies in the current educational processes and call for significant reforms.
On June 5, 2025, Ortitay announced that “The lists are out in PA.” This tweet marks the release of new educational reading lists within the state.
Continuing his critique on June 6, 2025, Ortitay stated that he had taken action by sending a letter to the Acting Secretary of Education. He urged them to reconsider and revise Act 135’s reading list. Ortitay expressed dissatisfaction with the current process, stating that it “failed PA’s students and teachers.” The letter is available for public viewing through an online link he provided.
Later on the same day, Ortitay further criticized the Department of Education’s handling of Act 135. He accused them of not fulfilling their responsibility to enhance literacy standards. Instead, he alleged that they merely copied strategies from other states. According to him, “PA students deserve better.”
Act 135 refers to legislation aimed at improving literacy rates among students by establishing rigorous reading standards and lists. However, its implementation has faced scrutiny from educators like Ortitay who believe more innovative solutions are necessary.
