Rep. Bud Cook has announced the allocation of $8.3 million in grant funding from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) aimed at cleaning up abandoned coal mine lands in Greene County. The funds have been awarded to Natural Streams Foundation and are designated for removing coal refuse from sites and restoring over six acres of land in Cumberland Township. This initiative is supported by the federal Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
"Cleaning up abandoned coal mines promotes strong economic opportunities, and expands our quality of life," stated Cook. "Here in the 50th district, I am proud to always advocate for projects like this which revitalize our region."
The DEP prioritizes such grants to tackle human health and safety issues arising from abandoned coal mines. It also focuses on treating acid mine drainage (AMD) as part of its AMD Set-Aside Program, which aims to continue watershed restoration efforts and prevent restored streams' degradation.
