Rep. Bud Cook from Pennsylvania has proposed new legislation to enhance tire recycling options and mitigate pollution. The initiative aims to amend state laws to facilitate tire pyrolysis, classifying it as a form of advanced recycling. Pyrolysis involves using high heat without oxygen to decompose materials, allowing the byproducts to be repurposed.
The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection highlights the environmental, health, and safety risks posed by improperly disposed of tires. These risks include potential fires, pollution, and breeding grounds for mosquitoes.
Cook explained the benefits of tire pyrolysis: "In addition to the reduction of tire pollution, the pyrolysis of tires has numerous other benefits, including the production of oils, gases, carbon black and other materials that can be reused. It also reduces the amount of materials sent to our landfills." He believes that reducing the regulatory burden on this process could lead to job creation and attract investment in Pennsylvania.
The legislation coincides with a proposal for a new, technologically advanced tire processing plant in Allenport. Pennsylvania currently has limitations on how scrap tires can be disposed of. The proposed change in regulations has been forwarded to the House Environmental and Natural Resource Protection Committee for review.
"By updating the regulatory burden on tire pyrolysis this law, our communities can benefit from the jobs and investment this emerging technology would bring to Pennsylvania," Cook stated.
