Borland Manor Elementary School issued the following announcement on Sep. 14

Canon-McMillan School District Asks for Patience with Free Meals Program

“I just can’t thank the Canonsburg Middle School staff enough for how helpful they were with this program. They were running back and forth between the building and cars and helping us stay as organized as possible. I seriously can’t thank all the Cafeteria Staff enough!” says Food Services Director Erin Bandi.

After news broke last week that the district would be serving free breakfasts and lunches until the end of December 2020, the response from the community was overwhelmingly positive! The district requested that a form be filled out prior to picking up the meals and only received approximately 600 forms but served almost 1400 meals for the first day (Monday, September 14, 2020)!   However, because of this amazing response things became a bit overwhelming. The first change the district will make next week is asking for parents and members of the community that are waiting in line to please stay in their cars. Please keep in mind that with the amount of meals being served there is likely to be a wait and the district is asking for patience while this process is being refined. The second change will be that no form is required.  This is a first come, first serve program and the amount of meals prepared will be based on the numbers from the previous days. The district apologizes, in advance, should there be a shortage of meals.

“Please bear with us and have patience. This was just the first day and we are still working it out. I personally went through the line to see the process through the eyes of a person picking up meals to see areas that needed improvement.”  Says Director of Business and Finance Joni Mansmann.

We also are tweaking the bundles to speed distribution up; instead of five-day bundles the district is now offering either two-day or three-day bundles. Still, the only questions that will be asked is for how many children and how many days.

Canon-McMillan School District wants to thank the community for the overwhelmingly positive response and for being so understanding. It can’t stress enough to be patient and practice kindness while waiting for the free meals!
