On December 12, 2023, the Washington County House Delegation consisting of Reps. Bud Cook, Andrew Kuzma, Natalie Mihalek, Tim O’Neal, and Jason Ortitay, released a statement expressing their outrage over the alleged actions of Washington County Controller April Sloane towards her dog. Sloane has been charged with two counts of felony animal cruelty.

They expressed their shock and appallment upon learning about the charges against Sloane, stating, "We were shocked and appalled to learn that April Sloane has been charged with felony animal cruelty as a result of the death of her dog."

They emphasized that all animals deserve to be treated with decency and voiced their extreme disappointment that a local elected official is being accused of such a despicable act.
