Rep. Bud Cook announced the awarding of $8.3 million in grant funding for the cleanup of abandoned coal mine lands in Greene County. The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) granted the funding to the Natural Streams Foundation, which will use it to remove coal refuse from abandoned mine sites and restore over six acres of land in Cumberland Township. This funding comes from the federal Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
“Cleaning up abandoned coal mines promotes strong economic opportunities, and expands our quality of life,” Cook stated. “Here in the 50th district, I am proud to always advocate for projects like this which revitalize our region.”
The DEP focuses on grant funding to address public health and safety issues stemming from abandoned coal mines and on treating acid mine drainage (AMD) through the AMD Set-Aside Program. This approach aims to continue watershed restoration and prevent the loss of restored streams.
