HARRISBURG – Members of the Washington County legislative delegation, including Rep. Tim O’Neal, Rep. Josh Kail, Rep. Natalie Mihalek, and Rep. Bud Cook, have joined forces to urge Gov. Josh Shapiro to intervene and facilitate the merger of Washington Health System (WHS) and UPMC. The delegation emphasizes the critical importance of this merger in ensuring the sustainability and accessibility of high-quality healthcare services in Washington and Greene counties.

Rep. Tim O’Neal highlighted the necessity of the attorney general's approval for finalizing the merger, expressing concerns about external political pressures complicating the process. He pointed out that despite overwhelming support for the merger during a recent public hearing, delays in the approval process are jeopardizing the livelihoods of employees and the continuity of healthcare services in the region.

Rep. Josh Kail underscored the potential benefits of the UPMC acquisition of Washington Health System, emphasizing the preservation of jobs and services for patients. He urged Gov. Shapiro to prioritize the public interest and expedite the approval process to prevent any further setbacks.

Drawing attention to Gov. Shapiro's previous involvement in resolving healthcare disputes, Rep. O’Neal called for the governor to actively engage in securing the future of Washington Health System. He highlighted the impact of unnecessary delays on the local community and urged for prompt action to address the ongoing uncertainties.

Rep. Natalie Mihalek echoed concerns about the prolonged discussions surrounding the merger, emphasizing the need for timely decisions to mitigate instability and ensure the well-being of residents in Washington and Greene counties.

Rep. Bud Cook reaffirmed his commitment to advocating for continued access to healthcare for local residents, emphasizing the importance of a positive outcome for the community.

The Washington County delegation's collective efforts aim to urge Gov. Shapiro to intervene decisively in support of finalizing the merger between WHS and UPMC, safeguarding jobs, services, and healthcare access for the residents of Washington and Greene counties.
