Rep. Bud Cook of the 50th Legislative District, Pennsylvania House of Representatives, expressed his concerns after voting against a $45.5 billion state budget for the 2023-24 fiscal year. Cook highlighted the state's progress in financial management since his election, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a robust Rainy Day Fund.
"When I was first elected, the state had enough emergency funds to operate for about three days," said Cook. "Over the years, we have worked hard to be responsible stewards of taxpayer dollars and build up the Rainy Day Fund to $5 billion."
Cook criticized the budget's increase in spending by 6%, arguing it exceeds projected revenues and fails to secure long-term fiscal stability. He stated, "Families cannot afford to spend this way. Business owners cannot afford to spend this way. Government absolutely cannot and should not spend this way."
